The horn is a 311-90.

Hope I'm wrong for kipduff's sake, but I'm not convinced since they look just like the tweaked 511s I did way back when to the point of wondering if mine migrated from Pensacola over time; plus woofer cutout in relation to vertical alignment with the horn vanes once the offset is factored in and last, but not least, the vanes taper to the weld joint whereas the 311's don't.

Well folks, i stand corrected, and GM knows he's not wrong.

Typical cutout for an Altec woofer is 13-5/8, the 2 center sectors of the 311 form a square about 12-1/2 inches a side, the center 2 sectors on the 511 form a square about 8-1/2 inches a side. I was trying to use that ~13-5/8 woofer opening to scale the horn without considering how the camera lens may or may not accurately reveal depth/Z axis.

Looking at a 511 next to a 311, and the "box" ahead of the throat is clearly visible looking down the axis of the 511, just exactly as it is in the OP's pic. There's no "square" or "box" looking down the 311 axis, just a "slot" formed by the converging horn bells and a nice round throat.

Another thing that really threw me off was how the seams have been cosmetically filled and leveled. 511's usually have distinctly visible seams, while 311's are usually better cosmetically dressed.

My apologies to Kidpuff, looks like we're probably back to looking at A7 or Valencia components. Still a mighty nice pair to be gifted.

Some actually do a bit as a result of aggressive sanding/grinding of the welds.

I totally agree that there's no taper as the parts are cast, and isn't supposed to be in the finished product.

But, look at this 311-60. Somebody got happy with the dyna-file. You'll find some 311-90 with a similar situation.

Not surprised, especially if they have a late date code, but personally never seen any [not that many unfortunately] that didn't look cast, even when I Googled them before posting just to be sure. Forgot about looking down the throat, which BTW I sure would like to see if these have a [3] stone brake master cylinder hone's micro crosshatch pattern, though mine started life with '69 Ford 'Grabber' hood low gloss black [9295? The can's got a lot of runs, fingerprints covering its paperwork].

Gold looked good on Muzak speakers, but that's it for me [so far].

416A (16 ohm), 802D (16 ohm), 511B, N-500-E...... all in green. I'm trying to establish approximate dates- for me, the logo and style of the attenuator plate is early 60's. I'm gathering data sheets and any info I can find for reference. These components were removed from A7's. Appreciate any opinions. These boxes are pretty buzz-prone- and back is deteriorating particle board- I'm not liking them too much. Thinking of making a plain medium size box for the LF, and mount the horn assy exterior on top if. Valencias used 811 horns- so not sure if these are a good match without horn loading the 416A.

Sweet. You can build some different cabs for those and be very happy. Either some smaller Valencia style cabs, or some larger cabs for deeper bass.

Some of the dope or glue for the surrounds has gradually migrated and collected at the very bottoms of the surrounds. I'm going to try to remove some of it so that cones will have more even suspension all arround. I'm unable to attach photos- "you have exceeded quota".

The 416A suggests closer to mid 60's. Before ~'64 the woofer would be an 803B.

Regardless, nice set of matching components.

For giggles, any visible cone numbers on the back of the 416 cones?

It's easier to do more harm than good, proceed with caution.

A blow dryer on low or medium will often soften the dope a good deal. Acetone(nail polish remover) will dissolve it, but if left too long may also start to work on adhesives.
